Well on the bright side...

Actually a couple bright sides. (Hey Mr. Brightside?)

1) The entire reason I decided to reinstall Windows was because my Zune has never worked with my computer, requiring me to keep my old PC running to get music on it. If you can't imagine how much of a pain it was to have to use an old computer just for one particular task...well, let me assure you it was a pain! But this has resolved the issue and my Zune is now happily syncing music from this computer.

2) I also decided to up the RAM. Just going from 1GB to 2GB has made a remarkable difference. It might also be because I haven't installed a ton of crap yet. This computer is actually a year and a half old now and it was never top of the line to begin with (was never intended to be...not sure if I want to build myself a powerful machine again). With 2GB of RAM it runs fast. Once I get all 4GB in there I should at least be fine for all of my basic computing needs for a while.

Now if I'll be able to run Diablo 3 when it comes out is another story. ;)

The RAM was what I bought today instead of a laptop though. I've been going back and forth on whether or not I want one. I will be traveling soon and I thought it'd be nice. Then I realized I will be traveling with my work laptop so I really have no intention of carrying two. So if a RAM boost was all I needed (actually really didn't need it too bad...computer was running pretty well. Now it just seems to run really well!) then I'll sit tight on any computer upgrade for a while. If I can push this to 3 years then I'll look at all my options at that point.

Fixed

Well, on my first try I pulled the bad stick out. What a pain...now I have to go back to CompUSA tommorrow to exchange it for new RAM. Ah well...I'll be back to 4 GB in no time. I'm at least doing double what I started with today!

Just wish I'd figured it out quicker so I could have gone for a run. Don't want to go now. Its dark out.

Well I was going to go for a run after I finished setting my computer up. I have had issues with it for a while and decided it was time to say screw it and just reinstall windows. I seem to have run into a probem though. Either some of my memory I also bought today is bad (very possible) or I have another issue.

Hopefully its just a bad stick of ram...we'll see in a moment. I can't even boot my pc up right now.

Iron Chef

After a grueling battle in the kitchen to use today's signature ingredient, I vanquished my opposition in the Brandon, FL edition of Iron Chef.

Step 1 - Cook chili
Step 2 - ???
Step 3 - Profit!

I won a grill set.  Now I have a suspicion that there was noone else in competition with me despite their claim that others did enter their chili.  I saw noone and the competition was announced yesterday via email.  Its worth noting...I've never made chili from scratch before ;)

It was good if entirely unorthodox - Ground chicken & black bean chili

First Up - Basil

No great surprise here.  Basil is supposed to be the fastest herb to sprout.  And after just 2 days, I have basil.  I'll be cooking with fresh spices before I know it!

I'm a gardener...

A...hydrogardener?  So at work we've discussed a lot about growing our own food.  I think it would be a nifty thing to do if not for the fact that:

1) I hate bugs (and we have plenty in Florida)
2) I have nowhere to actually have a garden

#2 is a bit more limiting than #1.  And then I thought of my friend Pat who had some weird thing in his kitchen growing lettuce.  So I looked it up and behold...the AeroGarden!

I won't give daily updates of my gardenning prowess but I'll give somewhat regular updates here.  RIght now I'm only growing herbs.  Once I'm done with that I'll switch to lettuce.  After rebates & coupons it only cost me $100.  Not too bad considering I should get months of food out of it.  If I really like it I may get more so I can grow more than one thing at a time.

I can't believe how inexpensive the whole system is.  I looked up less consumer centric systems after seeing this one and its easily 1/2 to 1/3 the price of any similar system.  It probably is a bit lower yield than those but given I live alone...this will produce more than I can use.

Free RPG Day!

Well, today was fun.  It was free RPG day so I woke up and went down to the The Comic Club with my buddy Adam.  We were there for an hour just browsing and chatting with people.  The CC is a fun store and on Free RPG Day they do tons of things.  The owner has the standard give-aways that come in the free rpg day package.  On top of that he puts together a goodie bag of stuff for a grand prize drawing (which I didn't stay for).  Every 15 minutes they have another drawing.  When you come in they give you a ticket and if you get called you win...something.  We were standing in line to pay for our stuff (I bought the new SW GM screen...very high quality I might add) and Adam's number got pulled.  He won some game.  It looked ok...I have a feeling it was being given away since they couldn't sell it...but hey it was free!  I renewed my store membership as well since I first got it last year on Free RPG Day.

After that I ran a rare weekend game of Star Wars (we usually play on Fridays).  It was great since noone was in a rush and the guy that normally causes the game to drag wasn't here.  We realized we need to talk to him ;)  So just a big RPG day.  I didn't win anything but I did get to pick from the free swag (which you get when you buy something at CC).  I took a D&D 4E adventure.  I got a Dungeon Crawl Classic last year so I figured I'd add to my collection.

Good day!

I really wanted the bar...

But realistically, I don't think I can do it.  I found some really awesome leather couches at Kane's Furniture this week and they're definitely my style.  Only thing is they're a little larger than what I was thinking of going with.  I only have so much room to work with here so something has to give.  That something is the bar since it was going to be purely decorative.

The rearranged room setup that I'm looking at now I really like still.  Table stays by the window and the couches will go on the other end of the room, facing each other.  I'll put a coffee table between them and against the wall wil be my aquarium.  The only big pain about this now is that to put the TV in the most watchable spot, it has to go on the wall opposite the TV jack.

If I still want to do the bar, I can probably do that downstairs.  Since I have that set up more as a theater and its far away from the kitchen, I'll have to see if I can fit a small fridge & bar in there (I think I can).  Might be the better way to do that.

This will be good....I should have everything other than the aquarium set up by early July.

First Day At The Gym

running
Over the weekend I finally joined LA Fitness.  There's one within walking distance of me so its very conveient.  My biggest issue is that I don't want it to affect my running.  WIth how hot its getting now that summer is really taking hold here in Florida it may actually save my running.   It was getting to the point that I was having to go on my runs at 7:30 or 8:00 at night.  I just can't run in 90+ degree weather.  I do want to go to the gym a little earlier than I went today but 3 guys from work were going at 7 so I hung around to go with them.

I did 30 minutes on the treadmill.  I discovered it couldn't go fast enough for me (so I definitely want to keep a few days of outdoor running).  It wasn't that it wasn't fast (up to 7 mph) but the treadmill is a lot easier than running outside so I had no real problem running on it at top speed.  Spent the rest of the time doing core.  Tommorrow I get a free session with the trainer which I expect to be a waste of my time except they'll do some measurements which is all I really want.

They have a great pool so I'm thinking of adding that into my routine.  Now I'll also have a place to go when the weather is bad.  I didn't run on Sunday because of thunder & lightning.  I didn't think to go to the gym.  I'll have to do that now.   Now I just need to figure out a program for myself to start with.  I did pretty good with the whole running thing.  Time for the next step.

Ok, its time to plan this before we run out of summer ;)  Here's my proposed weekends :

June 21st
June 28th
July 5th
July 19th
July 26th

I don't have a particular preference.  Also, Friday, July 4th I plan to do a BBQ & fireworks that night.  If anyone would like to come, let me know.  Trying to decide how big that will be.  Keep in mind I have a spare bedroom and couch if anyone needs to sleep over (and by then may have a couple more couches.  Otherwise there's plenty of room for air mattresses) after partying 8)  Not sure how easy it would be to do both on that weekend but if everyone is available we can make it work.

Anyway, let me know!

Yeah, oops, I am in line at security at TPA. I didn't think about how packed the airport would be today. I have plenty of time since I did my bags at the curb. But I never carry cash and the porter didn't get a tip which I really didn't like but it was that or risk missing my flight. I should keep an airport fund in my car for that since I've been consistently cutting my flights to the wire. which is fine but clearly I need to be better prepared to do it.

Fortunately i'll be at my gate in a few minutes. why show up at the airport hours early when 45 minutes before my flight will do 8D

So I talked to Carolyn the other night (last night!) and it made me realize that I haven't seen everyone since January.  And my being busy is no excuse!  (Well it is...I really have worked a lot on the weekends the last few months ;) )  Anyway, I'm pretty sure right now that I'm going to come up this weekend after I ditch Tommy & Andy at the airport on Saturday morning.  I hear Huntley will be in town too and I haven't seen that kid in a while either.

So unless something terrible comes up (which, while always possible I think is also very unlikely this weekend) I will be up!

Running right along...

running

Well, the past 4 days had been really tough runs for me since I was trying to recover from being sick last weekend.  I felt better and better every day though and by yesterday, when I wisely decided to stop running in the terrible heat around 4 or 5, I felt much better.  Saturday I ran 4 miles but it took me 47 minutes.  By far my worst time.  Running at 4 pm though with a stiff wind was a killer.  Yesterday I did my run around 7:45 and got my time down to 43 minutes.  It was still really windy but I felt much better.  Tonight though, I decided I really wanted to push myself.   Tonight I finished my run in 36:21.  I'm pretty sure that's by far my best 4 mile time at just a hair over 9 minute miles.  If I could do 6 miles at that pace I'd be really happy.

I think its time to start looking for some 5 & 10Ks.

Made It!

Now what?  My original goal when I decided to change my diet was to get down to 170.  I didn't really want that to be my target though and always felt like I'd rather be down at 165.  I finally got down to that weight, which I am very happy with.  I'd say I'm pretty much done with losing weight, which is nice since I can add about 700 calories back into my diet ;)  Or more on days I run.  Big difference!

Running took a bit of a hit the past 2 weeks.  Last week I spent so much time cleaning up the old apartment I never got a chance to run during the week and then after my run on Thursday (A good one too!) I got sick immediately.  Yesterday I finally got back out again but only managed a couple miles.  I figure later today I should do a bit better than that.

Next week though I'm adding in the gym.  I'm feeling good about the shape I'm in for the first time in like...6 years.  There's still a few things that running can't give me though.  I figure I'll add in some core body workouts for now.  Not really looking to build up a lot of muscle mass...just strengthen some key areas.  I'll probably start going at lunch so it doesn't interfere with my running in the evening.

Feelin' good...

Well, I feel like I've finally gotten completely over the bug that hit me last week. Food poisoning or whatever it was...it definitely took me out all weekend. By Tuesday I felt fine but my stomach still had trouble with a few things. Today though I feel fine so I think I can declare myself back to normal! (scary) I've pulled the link from LJ to Facebook. I wish I could leave it up but I was feeling more and more like I could write less and less here unless it was under friend lock.

The main thing that finally told me it wasn't a good idea to keep them linked was when one of my clients gave me a friend request. I put him on limited profile anyway but I just felt more comfortable completely removing any links to this blog there. Ah well...dunno how many people read the notes over there anyway.

Guess I like Yoko Kanno!

music
I have to say one of the coolest things (to me) about my Zune is that when I plug it back in to charge/sync/whatever it takes all the music I've played on it since the last time I connected it and sends it back to the Zune.net servers. I have a social profile that shows all the music I've played. I think its pretty cool! It lets me see how much I've listened to music over time. Yoko Kanno is my #1 artist with 397 plays over the past month. That just barely edges out #2 3 Doors Down with 367. Yoko does a lot of anime sound tracks and when I really need to focus at work, I tend to put my Ghost in the Shell tracks on.

I've been taking tennis lessons at the JCC here in Tampa and its been alright.  The instructors are great but the class itself has gone anywhere from mediocre to suck.  The beginner class I started off in was ok.  Some people in the class just were there probably for exercise.  Its one thing to be a beginner and not be good...I was there once (I was only in the class because I wanted to work on my fundamentals before hopping into the advance class since its been a couple years) but you can tell when people aren't trying.  And its just not fun to play against people who don't even try.  Waste of my time and money.  By not trying I mean basically walking to every shot. If you can't reach it without running...just let it go.  Which of course ends up being most shots.  Once I switched the advanced class things got better but the people in the class weren't that committed to actually coming to class.  While i enjoy the private lessons...I want to play with other people.  I'd gotten to the point where when I got to class and the instructor asked what I wanted to do...I just told her to work me as hard as possible.

So I started going to another class on Tuesdays last night and its so much better.  Same instructor, just a different location.  Its a big class of people who actually always come.  I even got a full set in last night (Which I lost 6-2 8( )  It was closer than the score indicated though since almost every game went to deuce several times.  I just couldn't break his serve.  At least on the first game we played I completely blanked him with 3 aces.  My serve was sizzling!  I just couldn't keep that up the whole time (If I could get that hot first serve under control I'd do so much better)  Ah well...he wanted my # so we could play on the weekend so it looks like I'll start getting more tennis in!

Getting there!

I've had a pretty good week of running so far. I ran Sunday & Wednesday for a little over 8 miles so far. I actually would have gone further Wednesday night but a poor choice of DQ for dinner made itself known a little over 4 miles in! (I don't think I'll be eating DQ food any time in the near or distant future...) I'll do another 4 or 5 miles today and will try and do a longer run on Saturday but that will require me to wake up really early...so that may have to wait until Sunday.

I was happy to see that I weighed in at 169.5 today which was about where I was when I graduated from UF. Might even be a little less actually since a lot of my slacks feel a little loose. Not done yet though. I'd like to be between 160 - 165. Also want to start on some upper body. Not much since I really am not a fan of the gym but pushups, pullups and situps are easy to do.
